:// WYYD/Roanoke afternooner gone
  |

Veteran on-air personality Barry "The Bear" Michaels has exited Clear Channel Country WYYD/107.9 Amherst/Roanoke. Yesterday was his last day. He was with the station for 3½ years.

Michaels was let go doing mornings at Max Media's 92.9 Suffolk/Norfolk frequency in the summer of 2005 when the station dumped its 60s-70s Hits format (WWSO/WFOG) for its current AC/Classic Hits hybrid format "92-9 The Wave" WVBW. A year later, he was picked for mornings at WYYD but later was moved to afternoons.

Replacing Michaels at WYYD is market vet Rip Wooten who exits middays at Mel Wheeler's crosstown "Star Country" WSLC/94.9 Roanoke. And replacing Wooten at Star Country is “Boomer” (Nathan Hatcher) who exited another "Star Country" station (WMAD/96.3, Madison WI) in January.

:// Cox blows up Mix for a River
  |

103-7 The River, WURVCox Radio spun the format wheel on Hot AC "Mix 103-7" WMXB Richmond today at 3 p.m. for Triple A "The New 103-7 The River, Richmond's Best Alternative" WURV.

From a mass email: "You asked, we listened and now's it's here... 103.7 The River is now Richmond's Best Alternative! We're bringing you less commercials and 52 minutes of music every hour from artists like Daughtry, Dave Matthews Band, The Cure, Foo Fighters, Alanis Morisette, Radiohead, Matchbox 20, Kings of Leon, Sheryl Crow, U2, Bob Marley and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

103.7 The River, Richmond's Best Alternative, is completely different from cookie-cutter formats that can be heard in any other city. It's a new kind of station, designed specifically for Richmond, and staying true to the music. And we believe a song intro is just as important as the middle, not a place for DJs to talk, so we respect your music by never talking over your songs."

The final track on Mix was Sarah McLachlin's "Angel" with the Foo Fighters introducing The River with their song "Learn To Fly."

94.9 The Point, WPTENationally syndicated "Kidd Kraddock In The Morning" has been canned by Entercom's Modern AC "94.9 The Point" WPTE Virginia Beach. Kraddock started on the station less than a year; with many speculating the only reason why he was brought on in the first place was to block Max Media's new CHR "Hot 100.5" WVHT Norfolk from picking up the show.

According to WPTE's Facebook fan page, former morning hosts Chuck Doud and Woo Woo (The Morning Point) move back into mornings beginning Monday, April 19 with Ryan Seacrest in middays (10-2), Barry Mckay for afternoons (2-7) and syndicated "Your Time with Kim Iverson" being heard 7-midnight.

:// Retired Norfolk broadcaster Joe Perkins dies
  |

FROM A VETERAN HAMPTON ROADS BROADCASTER: Joe Perkins, known decades ago as 'The Esso Reporter' on Norfolk's WTAR (WTKR-TV) died April 10th at 75. Joe retired as program director of WTKR-TV in the 1990s but then did two years of shoot-it-yourself outdoors reporting as part of the station's 'Have a Nice Bay' awareness campaign for the Chesapeake Bay.

Years ago, Joe also flew traffic and agricultural helicopters, enjoyed motorcycling and was a faithful guardian of the transplanted heart he received 15 years ago, which extended the time he enjoyed with his beloved wife, Carolyn. Joe was an extraordinarily funny storyteller with an uncanny knack for remembering people's names and family and business connections. He was an 'old school' broadcaster who respected the profession and understood that the priviledge of a broadcast license included a duty to serve the public.

Joe Perkins will be missed.

:// NE NC radio stations for sale?
  |

Capsan MediaIt appears that Virginia Beach-based Capsan Media (Sports "ESPN Radio 92.3" WZPR Nags Head, Country WYND/97.1 Hatteras, Alternative "99.1 The Sound" WVOD Manteo, "Classic Hits 104-9" WFMZ Hertford) has been hit with hard times.

In a filing with the FCC to reduce the power of WVOD/99.1 because of equipment failure, Capsan states "... in light (of) the current economic climate, (Capsan Media) is struggling financially and presently unable to afford the entire costs of repair. We have heard that folks are already been sniffing around Capsan Media. One name near the top of the list... Max Media (Hot AC "Beach104" WCXL/104.1 Kill Devil Hills, Country WCMS/94.5 Hatteras). Stay tuned...
