:// Hopewell AMer back on the air | Monday, April 2, 2007
WHAP/1340 is back on the air with, as one reader describes, as a hybrid Vintage Soul/R&B/Black Gospel format. The station is airing tape-delayed segments recorded from World Media Broadcasting Co's (headed up by Preston T Brown) WCLM/1450 in Highland Springs but it's not a simulcast. Another VARTV reader heard the station owner give "a lengthy motivational speech;" in how he "moved up the ranks to own a car dealership and a 'bankrupt radio station'."
WHAP is being sold to PT Brown Broadcasting for $150,000 by MainQuad Communications. Back on June 1, 2006, Rick Brady's (formerly nights at The Star Radio Group's Country WFLS/93.3 Fredericksburg) Silver Dolphin Communications signed-on WHAP with a Traditional Country format and was hoping to acquire the station for $200,000. Living Faith Ministries' WLFG-TV/68 and WLFG-DT/49 Grundy VA has requested from the FCC to shut off it's analog operations on channel 68 and strictly be a digital station on channel 49.
The FCC says, "The Balanced Budget Act of 1997 directed the Commission to reallocate the 746-806 MHz band (encompassing broadcast channels 60-69) for public safety and commercial use. Accordingly, in 1998, the Commission designated Channels 60-62 and 65-67 for commercial use, and Channels 63, 64, 68 and 69 for the exclusive use of public safety. Until the end of the digital television transition, however, broadcasters are entitled to remain on these channels and be protected from harmful interference. In 2000, the Commission described how it would review, on a case-by-case basis, requests by incumbent broadcasters on channels 60-69 to voluntarily vacate their NTSC channels prior to the end of the DTV transition."
