Dave Desler, who taught radio broadcasting at the Chesapeake Center for Science and Technology for 25 years and retired as chief engineer at student-run WFOS/88.7, passed away on Saturday. He was 68.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Hickory United Methodist Church, 2708 S Battlefield Blvd, Chesapeake. The interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, 2700 Parish Ave, Newport News. The viewing will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Rd, Chesapeake.

Earlier this week, East Carolina Radio (ECRI) dropped the Classic Hits "Nick FM" stunt on WOBX-FM/98.1 Manteo for "NewsTalk 98." The station had been doing some flavor of current Rock for six years, the latest as Active Rock "98OBX," until August 30 when ECRI dropped the format.

WRVA/Richmond was recently honored with the Fisher House Foundation's Patriot Award in recognition of the station's May fundraising effort.
The Clear Channel news/talker raised nearly $120,000 for Fisher House, which provides housing and support for the families of wounded warriors receiving care at military hospitals.

Yesterday, Star Radio Group dropped Spanish on WYSK/1350 Fredericksburg for Sports (The Game) using the ESPN Radio network. On Wednesday, papers were filed with the FCC for Star to acquire translator W243BS/96.5 Fredericksburg from Positive Alternative Radio (PAR) to rebroadcast WYSK on FM.
WYSK does 1,000 watts during the day but just 37 watts at night. The 96.5 signal right now is doing 27 watts.
Purchase price? PAR "agrees to forego the first three years rent valued at $30,000 per year for (Star Radio Group's) leasing of space on... tower... use by radio station ("Positve Hits") WJYJ-FM (90.5 Fredericksburg)."

Viacom's MTV Networks is shutting down Urge, its suite of up to 50 music channels carried by Verizon's FiOS TV and AT&T's U-verse TV.

Saga Communications' Classic Rock "106.9 The Fox" WAFX Suffolk shuffled their on-air line-up yesterday to make room for a new host. Troy Brimmer (formerly Troy Shannon at Entercom Rhythmic Z104 back 2002) is now station's new morning show host. Sonja moved to afternoons and continues as Marketing Director for the cluster (WNOR/98.7, WAFX/106.9, WJOI/1230).

Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association Inc (WHRO) will get a new signal on the Eastern Shore. Positive Alternative Radio (PAR) has agreed to sell Christian Comtemporary "Spirit FM" (WRXT/90.3 Roanoke) WJCN/90.1 Nassawadox and low-power translator W261CN/100.1 Williamsburg to WHRO for $237,000.
WJCN has filed an application to change the station from a Class A to Class B, essentially covering the entire Virginia portion of the Eastern Shore. It's our guess that WJCN will rebroacast News/Public Affairs/NPR WHRV/89.5 Norfolk and a new set of call letters have been requested.
WHRO will lease the low power station back to PAR for $1 for the next year and $250/mo the following five years. The translator has filed an application with the FCC to more than double its power from 80 watts to 190 watts.
In addition to WJCN, WHRO will soon sign on two brand new stations -- WHRX/89.9 Gloucester Courthouse (simulcast of WHRO/90.3) and WHRG/88.5 Gloucester Point (simulcast of WHRV/89.5).

Local TV LLC's "NewsChannel 3" WTKR (CBS) Norfolk has named mornings/noon meteorologist Patrick Rockey as the station's new Chief Meteorologist. He started evenings/nights yesterday.
Rockey, who has been with Channel 3 for 8 years, replaces Chief Meteorologist Mike Harvey who will exit Fridayfor a similar position at Hearst Television's WTAE 4/ABC Pittsburgh.
Replacing Rockey, who was doing weather and co-anchoring, is the recent new hire (June 2010) Myles Henderson for weather and Blaine Stewart will be co-anchoring now with Laila Muhammad. Vanessa Murdock continues her part-time weather duties on the weekend.

The research company says the total number of TV households in the U.S. will climb to 115.9 million (115,905,450), an increase of one million homes (+0.9%) from last year.
Washington DC is still at #9 with 2,389,710 TV homes, an increase of 2.34%
Hampton Roads is unchanged at #43; 716,050 TV homes (0.87%)
Richmond up one notch at #57; 558,500 TV homes (0.82%)
Roanoke-Lynchburg jumps one slot to #66; 464,480 TV homes (0.71%)
Tri-Cities TN-VA (Bristol) leaps two to #91; 337,610 TV homes (0.89%)
