:// Hampton Roads radio news

We're hearing that Delmarva Educational Association's (Salem Communications) "K-Love" WAZP/90.7 Cape Charles is now full-power and dropped its directional antenna. WAZP was a Class B1 doing 7.5kW at 512ft. They will now be a full Class B doing 13kW at the same antenna height. The station had to protect the signal on 90.7 from William & Mary's campus station WCWM/90.7. This greatly increases WAZP's Peninsula coverage to the west and further SE into Hampton Roads (Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk)...

And speaking of WCWM, they have moved to 90.9. This greatly increases their coverage area but mostly over sparsely populated areas though WCWM is now listenable in Petersburg and SE Richmond. Since their new antenna location is significantly to the west of Williamsburg, WCWM is using the old facilities that were used for the 90.7 signal for a new booster station on 90.9. Licensed to Williamsburg, the new booster station is doing just 25 watts to cover the immediate area. The new calls are WCWM-FM1...

Delmarva Educational Association's new sister station WWIP/89.1 Cheriton is on the air again with the same looped music it was playing when they first came on the air last month testing their signal. No jingles, no ID's have yet to be heard..... (10/31/04)

:// News anchor Randles will step down indefinitely

WTKR news anchor Tom Randles will be off the air indefinitely following his arrest last weekend in Virginia Beach on charges of domestic assault during an incident involving his wife.

Randles will miss the station’s election night coverage and will be gone for at least part of the November sweeps, a critical ratings period for local television stations. Larry Bonko of The Virginian-Pilot had the complete story..... (10/31/04)

:// K95 pushes aside Lite 98 for top spot

K95Arbitron released the "summer" radio ratings for Richmond earlier today. Cox Radio's Country "K95" WKHK/95.3 jumps ahead of CC Soft AC "Lite 98" WTVR/98.1 to become the new #1 radio station (12+) in Richmond. Further back was CC Urban "106-5 The Beat" WBTJ at third. Fourth was CC "NewsRadio 1140" WRVA and fifth was Radio One Urban "Power 92" WCDX...

Other market notables: Radio One's Urban AC "104.7 Kiss FM" WKJS sinks to a 3.8 from a 5.2 in the Spring Book though sister Urban Oldies "Magic 105.7" WJMO continues to rise to place sixth overall (12+). CC's CHR "Q94" WRVQ continues its slow recovery from the dismal Fall '03 and Winter '04 Books. Did Cox Radio's AC "Mix 103-7" WMXB decent showing have any effect knocking Lite 98 off of the top perch?

The Alternative "wars" continue to be close though the gap did widen slightly with Cox Radio "Y101" WDYL/101.1 slipping three-tenths of a point. CC's "102-1 The X" WRXL remained the same from Spring..... (10/27/04)

:// Z104 tumbles, Kiss new #1

105.3 Kiss FMArbitron released the "summer" radio ratings for Hampton Roads earlier today. Clear Channel's Urban AC "105-3 Kiss FM" WKUS is Hampton Roads' new #1 radio station (12+ demo). A very close second was Barnstable Contemporary Inspirational "Star 94.1" WXEZ, third was a tie between Entercom AC "2WD" WWDE/101.3 and Barnstable Country "97-3 The Eagle" WGH and fifth was CC Urban "103Jamz" WOWI/102.9...

Other market notables: Entercom Rhythmic "Z104" WNVZ/104.5 plunges from a 7.0 (12+) to a 4.8. Saga's Rocker "FM99" WNOR/98.7 bested and Classic Hits (now Classic Rock) "106.9 The Fox" WAFX tied Barnstable's rocker "100.5 MAX FM" WXMM but The Fox did lose a full rating's point from the Spring Book. Sinclair's "We Play Anything" format on WPYA (now on the much stronger signal -- 93.7) dipped to a 1.9 (from a 2.6). The stronger signal will help BUT by how much?

And now to CC's "Lite FM Norfolk" WCDG/92.1, WJCD 107.7. The best Lite could do on TWO frequencies was a 2.0 (12+). 92.1 received an anemic 0.8. And finally, Communications Systems' Gospel "Rejoice 100.9" WFMI Southern Shores cracks the chart at a 0.4. Rejoice is trying to target Hampton Roads, or at least the Southside. The station carries Metro Traffic reports and advertises heavily on HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) buses. WFMI's transmitter is over 55 miles away from Downtown Norfolk..... (10/27/04)

Cliff "Cuervo" Curtis, Program Director for East Carolina Radio's Active Rock "98X" WOBX/98.1 Manteo, is featured this week in AllAccess.com's "Rock, 10 Questions with..." (10/27/04)

:// TV news anchor Tom Randles charged with assaulting wife
Tom Randles
"Your NewsChannel 3" WTKR Norfolk anchorman Tom Randles was arrested over the weekend and accused of assaulting his wife.

The incident happened at about 9:30AM Saturday at a home in the 5600 block of Magnolia Run Cir, said police spokeswoman Rene Ball.

Randles' wife then drove away from the home and flagged down a police officer, Ball said. Randles, 45, was later charged with domestic assault, a misdemeanor, and released on bond, Ball said. Police did not release details on the nature of the assault.

Kurt Williams has been filling in since Monday. Randles had been scheduled to go on vacation this week before the incident. As a result of it, he went on leave a couple of days early. Complete details on PilotOnline.com..... (10/26/04)

:// FCC poop

Sinclair Communications' Alternative "96X" WROX/96.1 is officially licensed to Exmore VA. The group successfully changed the COL (community of license) of WROX from Cape Charles to make room for the new 106.1 signal. 106.1 was originally licensed to Exmore as WEXM. That signal moved to Poquoson as WPYA (now WKCK)...

A new translator was granted to Educational Media Foundation (Salem Communications) on 96.9 in Newport News. If built, the 80 watt repeater (W245BB) will relay sister station "K-Love" WAZP/90.7 Cape Charles. The antenna is to be located near I-64, on the Newport News/Hampton line..... (10/26/04)

97-3 The EagleNight-time fill-in jock Kimi Stevens on Barnstable's Country "97-3 The Eagle" WGH just got the slot on a permanent basis Tuesday. Stevens started filling-in for Carol Lewis who abruptly exited Eagle after just three months on the air. Not only did Lewis hold down nights but was also the cluster's technical assistant. No word if Stevens will pick up those duties..... (10/22/04)

:// New LPFM to be on air soon

Roanoke College's LPFM Station - WRKE-LP 100.3 is undergoing program testing and should be on the air permanently by mid November says station member Dave Harrison. "If you want to drop us an e-mail to let us know how we sound (once we're on-air) you can visit wrke.org and e-mail us. We hope to update our site soon.... It is completely student run, so the programming should be interesting!" Dave passes on some station technical details:

My wife Brenda and I were touring the homes in the 2004 Home-a-rama this year held at East Beach in Norfolk this past Saturday. The Tidewater Builders Association displays 16-18 homes from different builders and designers, fully furnished.

We end up running into apprentice wanna-be Maria Boran from Donald Trump's "The Apprentice" on NBC. She resides in Virginia Beach. Boran was touring the homes, priced from slightly below $1M to over $1.25M, just like the rest of us. Was she eyeing for a new purchase? No one knows who won this year's "The Apprentice." The show has finished taping except for the LIVE finale to air in February 2005..... (10/21/04)

:// WFLS tops in the Summer

Arbitron released Fredericksburg's radio ratings earlier today. Free Lance-Star Country WFLS/93.3 was on top with a 14.0 (12+ demo). Second, was Mid Atlantic Network Hot AC "B101.5" WBQB with an 8.5, 3rd was a tie between Telemedia Country "Thunder 104.5" WGRX and Bonneville News WTOP-F/A at a 5.2, fifth was Free Lance-Star "Class Rock 96.9" WWUZ with sister Alternative WYSK/99.3 at number six... Other market notables: Mid Atlantic's "NewsTalk 1230" WFVA sours to 8th (3.0), Telemedia's "Oldies 95.9" WGRQ was tied at 12th (2.4) and Piedmont's Country WJMA/103.1 rises to a tie at 16th place..... :// Local GM/owner has passed away

It is with great regret to report that Jim Campana, owner/GM of Real Oldies "Surf 92.3" WSRV Deltaville and WWBR/107.9 West Point, passed away on Saturday. He was 56 years young. Never meeting Jim personally, we did correspond with each other via email on multiple occasions. He was both kind and very helpful to me with parts of the VARTV website. He will be missed. Our prayers go out to his family and friends. Family and friends can sign Jim's guestbook on the Richmond Times-Dispatch website..... (10/19/04)

Her guests tonight are Sandra Bernhard and "Drive By Truckers." Joyner left Hampton Roads in 1996 to sky-rocket to Fox O&O "FOX11" KTTV Los Angeles. She's currently the on-air entertainment anchor for the morning show on CBS O&O "CBS2" KCBS Los Angeles..... (10/19/04)

:// This is an interesting rumor
Mike Lewis
We've heard from several sources that Mike Lewis was in town taping some stuff with Barbara Ciara on the WTKR (3/CBS) news set. If you remember, Lewis was a very popular anchor on Belo's WVEC (13/ABC) for thirteen years before leaving Hampton Roads for a smaller market -- Scranton/Wilkes-Barre PA. Lewis currently anchors the 6 and 11PM newscasts on "Newswatch 16" WNEP (ABC). Who owns WNEP? The same folks who own WTKR (3/CBS) -- The New York Times.

Of course, this has stirred up all kinds of speculation that Lewis will come back to Hampton Roads and anchor on Channel 3. One scenario has Lewis taking over as the main anchor, with Tom Randles being bumped down. Another says Mike will be the #2 guy. A third says Lewis will be #2 until Randles' contract is up - then Tom is out the door.

Larry Bonko of The Virginian-Pilot made this statement in the newspaper on December 12, 2001... " A rumor that refuses to die has Lewis returning to Hampton Roads to work for WTKR." Could it be true? If so, this isn't the first time Lewis and Ciara have anchored together. Together, they helped launch LNC4 (now LNC5) and "Pilot 13 News at 10" in mid-February 1998. LNC (Local News on Cable) is a joint effort of The Virginian-Pilot, Cox Communications and WVEC. (10/19/04)

:// Shake-up at The Sound, Convergent Broadcasting

Convergent Broadcasting Outer Banks (WVOD/99.1, WZPR/92.3, WYND/97.1, WFMZ/104.9) recently axed longtime morning host Shelley Mills and afternoon drive guy Roland, both from AAA "99.1 The Sound" WVOD Manteo. Some Convergent air talent and sales people have been seen interviewing at both Max Radio of the Carolinas (WCXL/104.1, WWOC/94.5, WGAI/560, WQDK/99.3) and East Carolina Radio (WRSF/105.7, WERX/102.5, WKJX/96.7, WOBR/95.3, WOBX/98.1, WOBX/1580, WCNC/1240, WZBO/1260). For now, John Matthews will be on 6AM-noon, Matt Cooper noon-6PM and Tad 6PM-midnight on The Sound.

We hear that Mills was already heard this past Saturday on Max Media Hot AC "Beach 104" WCXL/104.1 Kill Devil Hills doing the midday shift. Right after Mills was Roland holding down the afternoon shift on Beach. We're hearing that both jocks will stay around the Max building -- to be heard on Beach 104 and "Water Country 94.5" WWOC Hatteras..... (10/19/04)

:// Small changes on 13NEWS

13NEWSRecently, "13NEWS" WVEC (ABC) Hampton/Norfolk recently overhauled some of its graphical elements. Namely, the news opens have been redone, as have the "re-opens" where the anchors are introduced. They feature snazzy new animations, new shots of the news team, revamped music, and stronger emphasis on the "Spirit of Hampton Roads" campaign. It looks sharp.

A more subtle change is the new announcer being used for voiceovers. Local musician Doc Christian now handles the news announcing duties, and he's been handling them ever since the reintroduction of the Spirit campaign at the start of the year. He's being phased in slowly as WVEC progressively phases out announcer Greg O'Neill. O'Neill, a nationally-known name in voice-overs, has been serving as the voice of the Fox News Channel for some time now. Channel 13 looked to Christian to add a new flair to the news elements, and moreover to avoid any cases of "mistaken identity" between Fox News and Belo Broadcasting's WVEC... (10/19/04)

:// Ted Alexander gets more air time

When Dave Wingert decided to end his nationally syndicated show "Dave 'Til Dawn" two weeks ago, it left a hole in Entercom AC "2WD" WWDE/101.3 Hampton/Norfolk overnight schedule. The hole's been plugged by Ted Alexander. His new shift is in addition to being heard on 2WD on Saturday middays and Sunday afternoons. And yes, Alexander still is the "Your NewsChannel 3" WTKR's Sports Director..... (10/19/04)

:// TV news wars heating up in Shenandoah Valley?

NBC29That's what we're hearing... "NBC29" WVIR Charlottesville is fighting back against Gray Television, and not just in Charlottesville. The station is going after WHSV (3/ABC) Harrisonburg, Gray's long established property in Harrisonburg, by stepping up their Shenandoah Valley newsroom. "NBC29" has added a third reporter to its Augusta County bureau. That reporter is County native Tamara Hinton, who has worked as a reporter for TV3 for the past few months. The move has staffers at WHSV furious since Hinton was essentially trained by WHSV to work at their competition.

As of this week, WHSV has one full time reporter working in Augusta. Channel 29 will now have three reporters, a full time photographer, and a remote live truck in addition to more than 40 anchors, reporters and producers, and a fleet of live trucks waiting to take on Grays two new stations ("CBS19" WCAV and "ABC16" WVAW) on the other side of the mountain..... :// Sinclair Communications mistaken for Sinclair Broadcast Group airing TV show on Kerry

Right name. Wrong company. Since early last week, Norfolk-based Sinclair Communications (WROX, WPYA, WKCK, WNIS-A, WTAR-A) has been barraged with telephone calls and e-mails over plans to air a program critical of Sen. John F. Kerry before the Nov. 2 election.

The only problem: That's another Sinclair. "We don't want to be associated with them. It's just not our company," said Lisa Sinclair, general manager of the family-owned chain of radio stations. "We’re a small, locally owned business." The whole story by Michael Davis of The Virginian-Pilot..... (10/17/04)

:// CBS19 nabs anchor

CBS19 NewsWCAV, CBS 19 in Charlottesville, announces the hiring of Jeremy Settle as Weekend Anchor and Capitol Hill reporter for the station. Jeremy is currently the Assignment Manager for WUSA-TV, the CBS affiliate in Washington DC.

"Jeremy is a great addition to the team" says Ric Barrick, News Director for WCAV. "His experience and enthusiasm is a welcome find... We expect great contributions from him as we gear up to launch our weekend news."

Jeremy will continue his duties at WUSA. Barrick notes that "...it is a natural fit. We expect to have a good news gathering relationship with our CBS affiliate in Washington. We often will cover counties that reach into their market which are quite a distance from WUSA. We hope to be an asset for them during breaking news."

WCAV is one of the first newsrooms in the country that will operate in a tapeless environment making newsgathering more efficient than the traditional set up.

WCAV Channel 19 is the start up CBS affiliate in Charlottesville. The station is owned by Gray Communications which also runs WVAW Channel 16, the new ABC affiliate in the city. WCAV will launch CBS 19 News at 6 and 11 after the upcoming elections with weekend news soon to follow..... (10/16/04)

Two brand new classified ads have come into VARTV. The Hampton Roads Radio Group (WGH-F/A, WXEZ, WFOG, WXMM, WCMS) has an opening for a Production Assistant. :// The Outlaw aligns with more municipalities

WLRTThe City of Poquoson and the City of Newport News have both entered into an agreement with Hampton Radio II's NASCAR & Oldies "1490 The Outlaw" WLRT Hampton for emergency broadcasting whenever a state of emergency is declared. The station made a similiar agreement with the City of Hampton back in the middle of August.

"Emergencies" would include school closings, approaching storms, flooding, etc. The broadcast of the emergency message would be on the hour and half hour. Poquoson officials will also participate in the weekly 30-minute talk show with Hampton on Tuesdays from 12:30PM to 1:00PM..... (10/15/04)

:// New Richmond radio station wants change

MainQuad files an application with the FCC to increase its antenna height on move-in WCUL/98.9 Midlothian/Richmond. MQ requests an antenna height of 746 feet with an ERP (effective radiated power) of 4.8kW. The station was granted a CP (construction permit) for an antenna height of 601 feet with an ERP (effective radiated power) of 7.3kW. They still want to use the same tower..... (10/14/04)

:// WAVY moves Jane

WAVYWhen "The Jane Pauley Show" was picked up by LIN TV's WAVY (10/NBC), station officials were hoping the show would be a good lead-in to their 5PM news as Oprah is for WVEC (13/ABC). In a month and a half's time, this clearly isn't the case.

Not having any specific numbers in front of us, it's obvious Jane has lost audience share compared to The Montel Williams Show that it replaced at 4PM. Pauley's show is "averaging around a 2.5" where as Oprah is doing anywhere from an 8 to 11. WAVY's viewers are coming back for the 5:00 newscast, but they are still behind WVEC anywhere from 2-3 points at 5 o'clock. Montel is now shown in it's old time slot at 4 with Pauley's show moving to 3..... (10/14/04)

:// Sly as a Fox

WAFXSaga Communication's "106.9 The Fox" WAFX Suffolk/Norfolk has quietly segued to a Classic Rock format. The station now bills itself as "Hampton Roads' Classic Rock Station." The move was in response to Barnstable Broadcasting's new rocker "100.5 MAX FM" WXMM Norfolk. MAX plays both Rock and Classic Rock/Hits. Don't expect major changes to the playlist at The Fox.

Interestingly, WAFX was Classic Rock ten years ago when they were going head-to-head with "FM99" WNOR/98.7. When WNOR's owners acquired WAFX, is when the station shifted to Classic Hits..... (10/11/04)

:// Star City TV news

WDBJWDBJ's (7/CBS) main female anchors are switching roles. Jean Jadhon and Shannon Young have switched their duties effective this week. Jadhon will now co-anchor the dominant "News 7 at Six" with Keith Humphrey and report during the day, while Young will now anchor "News 7 at 5" and "News 7 at 11."

Jadhon has anchored the 11PM news since coming to the Roanoke market in the fall of 1992. She helped debut "News 7 at Five" the next year, a newscast that was originally rated behind news on "NewsChannel 10" WSLS (NBC) and Oprah on "ABC13" WSET. Insiders say the move was a mutual decision brought to management by the two women...

:// Rumor confirmed: Veteran Radio Personality leaves the business

The rumors began circulating in late September, and just confirmed last week: former Production Director and midday air personality David Lyons is leaving broadcasting behind. The new job? "I am starting my new duties as a Deputy Sheriff with a large county sheriff's office in October," says David. "Given the highly capricious and often back-biting nature that corporate radio has, I'm thrilled to be pursuing my second biggest passion in life--police work. I loved being on the air very much, but there's just no privately owned stations anymore that put the listeners first." Life has been busy, as he attends college for a criminal justice degree and continues to work for Scott Media Group. "I will continue to manage the Jerry Lee Scott Band and my duties at Scott Media won't change. Our latest website is set to launch very soon." (10/5/04)

:// 103Jamz to drop Doug Banks

Big B & DJ LawIt has been confirmed that CC Urban "103Jamz" WOWI/102.9 Norfolk will drop the syndicated Doug Banks Show after just seven months, for the station's afternoon talent The Boodah Brothers. Big B and DJ Law, who make up the Boodah Brothers, will bring back a local show in the morning drive for WOWI. The popular and long running "Supreme Team," which last featured Herman Hurston and Chase Thomas, were let go by Clear Channel in early March of this year and were replaced with Banks. Banks' show was previously heard on Hip-Hop "92.1 The Beat" WBHH until CC chucked the format on that station for Soft AC "Lite FM."

As for the Supreme Team, they weren't "on the beach" for long. They were quickly snatched up by Steve Hegwood's On Top Communications Urban "Hot 102.1/107.9" WWHV//WWBR who replaced the syndicated Russ Parr Morning Show on Hot. RPMS was a loser in the mornings. In a few short months after the Supreme Team debuted on Hot, the morning ratings shot up while WOWI's started dropping. There's no word yet who will replace the Boodah Brothers in the afternoon on 103Jamz. Boodah Brothers vs Supreme Team starts Monday, October 11. (10/4/04)

:// Another Country outlet in Richmond

MainQuad did indeed sign on a new Country format on the now defunct "Smooth Jazz 93.1" WJZV Ettrick. "93.1 The Wolf, Country That Rocks!" signed-on after a brief announcement at 9:31 this morning. We hear that Jeff Beck will program the new station and also hold down the afternoon shift. He's familiar with the format; he signed-on Fredericksburg's "Country That Rocks" - Thunder 104.5 WGRX. The Wolf is in the middle of 93 hours of commercial-free music.

Since MainQuad flipped WJZV to Country, we're thinking their new Richmond (Midlothian) signal at 98.9 will go Hot AC. Sign-on for that station has been pushed back to late 4th quarter of this year..... (10/4/04)

:// Adam Stubbs celebrates 10 years at Lite Richmond

On Monday October 4th (tomorrow), Soft AC "Lite 98" WTVR/98.1 Richmond's Adam Stubbs celebrates ten years as PM drive host, Promotions Director, and Assistant PD for the station. "Lite 98" OM Bill Cahill says, "Adam's deep community involvement and continued number one ratings have made him a Richmond institution. Adam was the first of the now legendary airstaff to join Lite 98, and the first to set Lite on a winning track. We're all thrilled to celebrate with him." (10/3/04)

:// Smooth Jazz put to rest in Richmond

MainQuad's "Smooth Jazz 93.1" WJZV Ettrick/Richmond is no more. The station dropped it's format around 4PM this afternoon for a loop of construction noises and statements like "We're building a new station, come back Monday morning." The station's ratings have been steadily declining, hovering in the low 1's (12+).

Doing some snooping around, we find that the domain name of 931thewolf.com was taken out on October 1. We're thinking some form of Country (i.e. "Thunder 104.5" WGRX up in Fredericksburg). If this holds true, Cox Radio will find itself with new competition against "K95" WKHK/95.3. Listen to 93.1 in the late morning..... (10/3/04)

Whiteside's exit left an opening, so CC Soft AC "Lite 98" WTVR Richmond's Kat Simons will once again be heard in the Roanoke Valley. Kat had previously been voicetracked middays on CC's Magic FM simulcast. This puts Kat middays on "Lite 98" Richmond, "Lite FM" Norfolk, and "Sunny FM" Roanoke. :// Working through the bugs

TalkRadio 1480RadioRichmond's new "TalkRadio 1480" WTOX recently signed with a new Talk line-up (most of it came from sister WLEE/990) that has some listeners irritated. One VARTV reader says "your constant 'dead air' gaps are enough to drive a person crazy. FIX this problem!" with another reader saying "It will loose the program and the carrier will stay hot. In approximately 3 minutes you will hear a modem dial up reestablish the program. It has almost no power. What is the future for such an irresponsible broadcast service?"

Well, remember the station is operating under a "Program Test Authority" from the FCC. A station official says "We know listeners expect it to be 100%, but there still is some tweaking and adjusting to do in the signal and equipment." The "dead air" is due to phone line problems with Verizon with the studio-transmitter link. There also have been issues with some of the equipment being used. The station official went on to say "... we understand the frustration. Believe me, it has been as frustrating for us as it has been for our listeners. The good news is that a new line and system that will cure the problem has been ordered and will be installed and operational within two weeks, and hopefully sooner. In the meantime, we ask our listeners to hang in there while we get this issue solved..... (9/24/04)

:// WNIS switches network affiliation, a fall-out from the CBS News scandal

NewsRadio 790WNIS 790 AM, Hampton Roads' leading news and talk radio station, is replacing its current network news provider, CBS News, with ABC News, effective Thursday, September 23rd, 2004. WNIS station management reached this decision after concluding that the credibility and reputation of CBS News had been seriously damaged by the ongoing scandal involving fraudulent memoranda.

"The outrage from our listeners has been deafening," said Dave Morgan, WNIS Operations Manager. "Unfortunately, CBS News has not acted sufficiently or swiftly with regard to repairing the damage. But we are pleased to join the hundreds of radio and television affiliates that already depend on ABC News for reliable, impartial news coverage."

"As a station with numerous opinion-based talk shows, WNIS relies on our news network to provide us with straight, fact-based reporting so that listeners can decide the issues for themselves," said Lisa Sinclair, WNIS GM. "Since Tony Macrini announced our decision this morning on his local talk show, (6-10am, weekdays on WNIS), the listener feedback has been overwhelmingly positive."

"We chose ABC because they have the most comprehensive radio news coverage among the competing networks," said Morgan..... (9/22/04)

:// Dave to sleep in

Dave WingertDave Wingert, who hosts the overnight syndie "Dave 'Til Dawn," has decided to call it quits. His show, heard midnight to 5:30AM weekdays and midnight to 6AM on the weekends, was picked up by Entercom AC "2WD" WWDE/101.3 at the end of March of this year. Wingert announced this morning on his show that his last show will be Wednesday, November 10.

VARTV reported back in March that the original reason for airing Wingert was to place a major market talent on air for an early morning lead in for 2WD AND to prevent the new CC Soft AC "92-1/107-7 Lite FM" WCDG//WJCD from using the program. This displaced Dan Reese but he continued to oversee the night-time operation of all four Entercom stations (WWDE, WPTE, WVKL, WNVZ) and help with the morning air talent prep for their daily shows.

:// Quick thought on WAVY's new news set

VARTV is guessing for WAVY (10/NBC) to unveil its new set just in time for the November sweeps, whose start almost coincides with the big election in November. In fact, they could go with the election, since big events are great for big makeovers. WVEC (13/ABC) did something similiar in 2003 when it unveiled the new "13 News WeatherLab." That was with the Super Bowl, which was also the informal start of the February sweeps that year. The WeatherLab looks unbeatable. What does Channel 10 have in store for its "Super Doppler 10" weather department? The November 2004 sweeps officially start just after Election Day this year..... (9/19/04)

:// The Triple Doppler dupe?

That's what one VARTV reader says. For weeks, WTKR (3/CBS) Norfolk has been promoting its three Dopplers that "protect" us in Hampton Roads, touting a new Doppler on the Peninsula. Channel 3's Chief Meteorologist Dave Parker says in his on-air promos "2 million watts covering over 600,000 square miles." This "new" Peninsula radar is in addition to the Southside and Buxton NC LIVE radars. The station even has added a billboard in Hampton to the campaign. ... at least for a morning. This Sunday morning, Rains resurfaces as the host of a special all-Obici Hospital edition of "Dialogue," WVEC's (13/ABC) public affairs discussion show, which airs Sunday morning (Sept 19) at 5:30 AM.

Most recently, Rains has been holding down the fort as part of the Breakfast Bunch with Dick Lamb and Paul Richardson on Entercom Mainstream AC"2WD" WWDE/101.3 Hampton, but many of us also remember LeAnne Rains the television personality, who's been working on and off with WHRO's various local projects over the past couple years, and who, many moons ago, also anchored for WTKR (3/CBS) and WAVY (10/NBC). By making this appearance on WVEC, Rains completes a sort of "hat trick" by having appeared on all of the "Big Three" stations.

Is this a one-time deal for Rains? Probably not. Rumor has it she'll be popping up a few more times on WVEC airwaves before too long. In what capacity, though, remains to be seen. She will, however, continue to do mornings on 2WD..... (9/18/04)

:// National show for E! Entertainment Television to film in Norfolk

Leon Quenneville, Executive Producer, announced today that ON-Q Productions has selected Norfolk as one of ten markets in which his production company will film Club-TV USA, a new dance TV show to air on E! Entertainment Television. Similar to MTV's The Grind, but updated for the 21st Century, Club-TV USA will feature a half hour of Norfolk's hottest dancers, interviews, contests, games, the country's most popular dance music and some special features unique to Club-TV USA.

"We've made numerous visits to at least 40 markets and decided that Norfolk is one of 10 that we saw as the most happening and 'up and coming' cities in the country. The people are great, the city is a lot of fun and the energy that we felt here convinced us that Norfolk was a place that we needed to be" commented Mr. Quenneville. The first night of filming will be Saturday, September 25th at Have A Nice Day Café. "We're actually going to be filming two shows. The first one will be a show that will be 100% Norfolk. It will air on the local FOX-TV affiliate WVBT-TV and will be called Club-TV Norfolk. The second will be a compilation of the footage we film in Norfolk as well as the footage that we film in the other 9 cities; it will be called Club-TV USA and will air on E! Entertainment Television each week” added Mr. Quenneville. Leon and his sidekick, DJ Greggy D will host the E! show, and an as yet to be named local personality will host the local show. "We're in talks with a local personality to host Club-TV Norfolk. We're very excited about this person and as soon as the deal is finalized we'll be making an announcement," said Mr. Quenneville.

On-Q will be holding casting calls for a regular cast of dancers, The Norfolk Hot 100, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights at Have A Nice Day Cafe beginning this week. There will also be another casting call held on Tuesday, September 21st beginning at 7pm. Check out www.ClubTVUSA.com for more information..... (9/16/04)

:// New set for Wavy

WAVYLIN TV's WAVY (10/NBC) Portsmouth made a brief announcement their 11PM newscast Saturday night that they're building a new news set. Perhaps this is one of the changes GM Ed Munson hinted to after the release of the last sweeps book. Their newscasts ratings are slowly slipping away into WVEC's (13/ABC, Hampton/Norfolk) lap. The last set they had was nice (my words) but over six years old and probably will head for another LIN property. There's been no mention of when the new set will debut. One VARTV reader said, "... guess they figure a new set with the same ole personalities will garner increased ratings. Go figure. LOL."..... (9/13/04)

Jerry Lee Scott was admitted to a Peninsula hospital September 10 in order to have dual surgeries performed, one of which was a follow up operation to last year's gastric bypass.

"This will be a slow recuperation, however, which means that the Jerry Lee Scott Band will not be performing for the next 4 to 6 weeks. Once he is able to resume concert appearances, we already have an overflowing calendar of dates leading up to New Year's Eve, so of course we're hoping for a speedy recovery."

New Richmond station "TalkRadio 1480" WTOX Glen Allen will be become part of the Radio Richmond Sports Net coverage of Central Virginia High School Football.

This year's High School Game of the Week will be simulcast on both WTOX and WLEE (AM 990) beginning tomorrow (9/10) when Mills Godwin hosts Monacan (7:30pm). Radio Richmond will continue to follow the Hopewell Blue Devils on WHAP (AM 1340) in the Tri-Cities.

The coverage starts with the Weekend Kickoff Show at 6:00pm hosted by Mark "Top Dog" Smith and Gary Criswell who returns after an one year hiatus. :// 93-7 Bob FM, 106-1 Kick FM

93-7 BOB FMSay what?! That's what we're hearing. Sinclair Communications just signed on the "We Play Anything" format on 106.1 just over six months ago to instant success. We hear that "BOB FM" will replace Country "Kick FM" WKCK Chesapeake on 93.7. When "Kick" first signed on, it did OK but since faltered and hasn't had any effect on Barnstable's Country "97-3 The Eagle" WGH Newport News/Norfolk.

106-1 Kick FMThe 93.7 signal is a monster at 100,000 watts beaming from Moyock NC compared to 106.1 at just 1,700 watts (with an antenna height of 502 feet) from Buckroe Beach in Hampton. We're hearing the "swap" will take place on Thursday, September 23 -- the first day of the Fall ratings period.
